Police Investigate Theft of Elderly Woman’s Purse at Atlantic Highlands Grocery Store

Police in Atlantic Highlands NJ are still trying to find a man who stole a wallet from a woman’s purse in a local supermarket last week. With the investigation not turning up any leads, law enforcement has now asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the culprit.
The suspect allegedly committed the theft on October 18 at the Circus Foodtown located at 3 Bayshore Plaza in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. The good news for law enforcement is that the theft incident was captured on video surveillance footage. The video images show the suspect as he approaches the elderly victim several times and tries to grab the wallet from her purse. After several unsuccessful attempts to snatch the wallet, the suspect finally removes the wallet from the victim’s purse.
After grabbing the wallet, the suspect calmly walked out of the Atlantic Highlands grocery store and reportedly got into a blue or green Ford SUV. Police officers spoke with witnesses who recalled seeing the vehicle leaving the store parking lot.
Thankfully, the elderly woman whose purse was stolen did not sustain any injuries as a result of the incident. However, she was likely shaken and upset by what happened.
Detectives with the Atlantic Highlands Police Department are actively investigating the theft. Although investigators have not yet been able to identify the suspect, they do believe that he probably has prior experience committing this type of theft.
If and when police are able to identify and apprehend the suspect, he could face very serious criminal charges for theft of movable property. Since this crime is classified as a felony, a conviction on the theft charges would likely result in prison time.
