Bicyclist Dies after Being Struck by Car on Road in Lakewood, New Jersey

A bicyclist was killed last weekend when a teenage driver crashed into him on a roadway in Lakewood, New Jersey.
The fatal bicycle accident occurred around 9:00 p.m. near the intersection of Williams Street and Buttell Avenue in Lakewood, NJ. According to authorities, the bicyclist was riding along Williams Street when a motor vehicle struck him.
The force of the collision caused the bicyclist to go flying through the air and subsequently slam into the pavement very hard. The victim sustained catastrophic injuries as a result of the collision and had to be rushed to Monmouth Medical Center South Campus in Lakewood NJ. Doctors at the Lakewood hospital did everything they could to stabilize the victim’s condition, but they were unable to save his life. The victim was pronounced dead approximately one hour after the car accident.
Authorities later identified the victim as a 63-year-old man who lives in Lakewood, NJ. Meanwhile, the driver of the car that allegedly crashed into the victim was identified as a 17-year-old teen who is also a resident of Lakewood. Since the motorist is a juvenile, police have not released his name.
At this time, it is unclear if the driver will face criminal charges or be cited for any traffic violations in connection with the fatal accident.
Regardless of the outcome of the investigation by the Lakewood Police Department, it is very possible that the surviving family members of the man who died could file a wrongful death lawsuit against the teen motorist. The reality is that many motorists in New Jersey fail to do enough to share the roadway with bicyclists, which can lead to serious car accidents. Although it is not yet known if the driver in this case was acting negligently, one thing is certain: a life was tragically lost.
