Top 5 Causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries

March 20, 2017 | By admin

There is no organ in the human body that is as important as the brain. The epicenter of control for the body, the brain is one of the most guarded parts of the body. From basic activities to certain workplaces, there are always precautions in place to protect the brain. It’s tragic then, when an injury that could largely be avoided affects the brain. According to data by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1.7 million people in the United States are experience a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), thousands of which occur here in New Jersey. Below we take a look at the top causes:

Slip and Falls

Far and away the most common cause of TBI, slip and fall accidents make up about 35.2% of TBI accidents. Slip and falls can happen in the workplace, around the house, and even while shopping if the right signage isn’t on display. This percentage is further broken down by age group; half of these are children at 14 years of age and younger, while seniors experience a TBI from a fall more than 62% of the time.

Auto Accidents

Car and truck accidents come in at a close second with a 17.3% . In this situation, car accidents account for injuries of all ages across the board. While this number seems low, it’s only measuring the injuries. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death from brain injury.

Falling Objects

Falling objects are a top cause of TBI with a staggering 16.5% of the injuries. Falling objects often occur from construction sites that don’t take the necessary precautions or even from falling signage.

Acts of Violence

Assault takes an unusually high spot at 10% – this could be from an attack, fighting, or just random assault. Assault is most prevalent amongst adults, leaving 2.9% of these injuries to children and less than 1% of attacks towards the elderly. Even at these low percentages, they are far higher than they need to be.

Other

“Other” is a catch-all category that fits the injuries that can’t really be explained. Accounting for 21% of TBI, other can really be anything from medical malpractice  to sporting accidents. Sometimes, a TBI won’t show right away. Those experiencing a TBI may not show symptoms of the injury until it’s too late to remember what could have caused the injury to begin with.

Traumatic Brain Injury should never be taken lightly. A TBI can affect the body in many ways, from mobility to cognitive abilities, and can cost thousands in hospital and doctor bills. Left untreated, a TBI can even cost a victim their life.
