Edison Township Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide for Fatal Car Crash

A man from Edison Township NJ has been charged with vehicular homicide after authorities determined that he was likely speeding just prior to a fatal car accident this summer.
The tragic incident occurred on Route 27 in Edison NJ on July 25, 2016. The suspect, a 20-year-old resident of Edison Township, was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck northbound on the highway when he approached the intersection of Route 27 and Peterson Avenue. That’s where the truck collided with a 1995 BMW sedan that was in the process of turning left from the opposite side of the highway.
The driver of the BMW was a 93-year-old man who also lived in Edison Township, New Jersey. Emergency medical crews briefly treated the victim at the scene before rushing him via ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Doctors at the New Brunswick medical facility tried valiantly to save the victim’s life, but he was later pronounced dead as a result of the truck accident.
Detectives with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and police officers with the Edison Township Police Department investigated the car crash and eventually determined that the suspect was driving the truck at an extremely “high rate of speed” just prior to the collision. Now the suspect has been charged with a very serious criminal offense in connection with the fatal accident.
While the criminal charges against the suspect remain pending, he is being held in police custody at the Middlesex County Jail. His bail was set at $35,000, so he will need to post that amount of money in order to secure his release from jail in advance of a criminal trial.
Additionally, the criminal case against the suspect might not be the end of his troubles. That’s because New Jersey law allows people who have lost loved ones due to the negligence of someone else to file a wrongful death claim and pursue damages in civil court.
