Hearing-Impaired More Likely To Be Involved In Accidents

New Jersey Car Accident Lawyers Hearing ImpairedResearchers have recently utilized data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to reach an important conclusion: over 15 percent of adults reported experiencing hearing issues.  Among these 15 percent, almost three percent were injured within three months of self-reporting hearing issues.

JAMA Otolaryngology Researchers

Upon stumbling on these statistics, researchers at JAMA Otolaryngology decided to record and track injuries related to leisure, sports, work, and driving. These experts found that hearing loss greatly increased the risk of injury. Statistics showed that the risk of injury was slightly lower for driving-related incidents, but hearing-impaired individuals were still more likely than non-hearing-impaired individuals to get in a motor vehicle accident. Those who self-reported having a lot of trouble hearing were up to 90 percent more likely to experience an injury. Authors noted that these findings were all based on self-reported data rather than verified hearing tests. Dr. Neil Bhattacharyya, the professor who authored the research, fully agrees that hearing loss predisposed people to injuries.
