Hold Owners Responsible for Dogs That Bite

February 5, 2015 | By admin

You were just minding your own business, working in your own garden, when the neighbor’s dog started to approach you. It was growling, at first. But growls turned into barking and barking turned into an attack. Next thing you know, you are bleeding. That dog just bit you!

The first thing that you have to do is get medical treatment. Your health and welfare must come first. However, it’s also important to preserve evidence so you can hold the dog’s owner responsible for your injuries.

  1. Take photos of the scene, the dog, your bite mark, etc. Try to document anything and everything you may think is relevant.
  2. Collect contact information – If there were witnesses to the attack, get their names and phone numbers.
  3. Talk to the owner of the dog – For medical purposes, find out about the dog’s vaccination record. Further, ask if the dog has bitten people before. You may not get a straight answer, but you can ask.

In New Jersey, dog owners are held responsible for any attacks, bites or damages that their dogs may have caused. This is true whether the dog has ever bitten before. While you may be reticent to file a claim if the dog that bit you is owned by a friend or a good neighbor, assure them that your decision to file a lawsuit won’t cost them out of pocket. Their homeowner’s insurance will likely pay the dog bite claim.

In order to get the full compensation that you are entitled to under New Jersey law, you will need a talented lawyer who is able to put forth an excellent dog bite case. If you or a loved one recently suffered a dog bite, call the personal injury lawyers at Lombardi & Lombardi.
