NJ car accident statistics

According to a NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) report, in 2015 [its most recent numbers available] there were 264,582 reported motor vehicle crashes. Routes that had the highest crash rates were Route 59 [rate of 19.14], Route 165 [rate of 11.31], Route 63 [rate of 10.63], and Route 5 [rate of 10.14].
Out of the 264,582 car accidents that occurred, 60,431 were crashes that resulted in injury. Another 547 of those accidents were, unfortunately, fatal.
Other traffic statistics compiled by NJDOT over the years indicate reasons why these accidents occurred, as well as where they tend to take place. Accidents frequently occur at intersections and a significant amount of fatal crashes took place on interstate roadways.
Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents while on the road. Distractions can be a number of different things, including cell phones, radios, passengers, and things outside of the vehicle.
Alcohol also tends to be a noted variable related to motor vehicle crashes. Accidents also tend to happen more often and at a higher rate during holiday periods.
