NJ Drivers Beware: Clear Snow and Ice from Your Car or Get Ticketed and Possibly Sued

January 28, 2016 | By admin

As set forth by a New Jersey law, motorists must take care to remove ice and snow from their cars before driving. This includes snow and ice that might have accumulated on the vehicle’s hood and roof, as well as all windows.

The law allows NJ police to issue traffic tickets and impose serious fines on violators. A single offense can result in a fine of between $25 and $75. Keep in mind that you can be slapped with a fine even if the snow or ice does not actually become dislodged from your car. More significant monetary fines can be imposed on a driver who fails to remove snow or ice that subsequently flies off the vehicle and causes property damage or personal injuries. Depending on the circumstances, a violation could result in a fine of between $200 and $1,000.

In addition to facing a significant fine, you could also be held liable in a personal injury lawsuit. Failing to remove snow and ice from your car can cause property damage and injury to others, raising concerns about auto accidents and personal injury lawsuits.

Although it might not seem like a big deal, snow and ice that goes flying off your car could end up seriously injuring another person, particularly if your vehicle happens to be traveling at a high rate of speed. In the worst cases, the end result could be a car accident that causes catastrophic injury or even death. Even if you are covered by insurance, a personal injury claim could potentially bankrupt you, so don’t take any chances.
