Researchers Find That Splenda May Cause Cancer

A new study reportedly shows that artificial sweeteners like Splenda that contain sucralose may be linked to cancer.
Italian researchers at the Ramazzini Institute conducted the study and found that consumption of sucralose could end up causing cancer. The researchers performed tests on more than 850 mice, feeding the test subjects different dosages of sucralose over a period of 12 days. The researchers ultimately concluded that mice fed higher doses of the sugar substitute were more likely to develop malignant tumors and hematopoietic neoplasms that can lead to leukemia and lymphoma.
Although the potentially fatal dosages were four times higher than the recommended daily amount for humans, it is believed by some health experts that something that causes cancer in high doses can also cause cancer in lower doses.
After the results of the study were published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit consumer advocacy group that closely follows food safety issues in the U.S., took swift action and quickly revised its safety rating on sucralose. The CSPI used to label sucralose as a “caution” food item, but the group now calls it a food item to “avoid” entirely.
Meanwhile, the Heartland Food Products Group, the American company that currently makes Splenda after purchasing the manufacturing and distribution rights from Johnson & Johnson in 2015, has called into question the methods used by the Italian researchers who conducted the study. The company issued a statement insisting that sucralose is perfectly safe for consumption and that it is not a dangerous food product. Additionally, the company said that the Italian study conflicts with “the collective body of scientific evidence” on the safety of sucralose.
