Take Notes Following an Injury or Accident

Taking notes after an accidentSuffering an injury and/or being in some kind of accident can be an overwhelming and emotional experience. The moment itself could go by in a flash. One moment you might be on your way to the grocery store and the next you’re flipped over on the side of the road after another vehicle t-boned you in an intersection.

When an accident happens because of another’s carelessness or negligence, or an injury happens in the workplace in a similar manner, you have the power to pursue legal action. In order to make sure you have the strongest case possible, taking notes will be essential.

Write Down Anything and Everything

Relying on your memory alone will not be sufficient. There may be small details about your incident or injury that are important to your personal injury claim or workers’ compensation claim.

You should get in the habit of writing things down, that way you have a reliable source to turn to for details about what actually took place. The following are essential things to take notes on immediately following your accident:

  • The accident – as soon as you have a clear head, begin writing out any and all details you can remember about the accident itself. What were you doing? Where were you going? Who were you with? What did it occur? Be sure to include any details about what you saw, heard and felt during the incident.
  • Your injuries – in the days following your injury, keep notes about any discomfort and pains you are feeling as a result. This can include anxiety, loss of sleep, pain, discomfort, and other problems. This will make it easier later on down the road to explain to an insurance company how much and what kind of pain you were in at the time. In addition, these injury notes can aid a doctor in diagnosing you and sharing them with a doctor will make them become part of your medical records.
  • Economic losses – write down anything you end up losing because of your accident and injuries. These include, lost work hours, job opportunities, missed classes, family, vacation, or anything else you would have otherwise enjoyed or were able to do before your accident.
  • Conversations – keep track of every conversation you have in regard to your accident and claim. Important conversations include those with any witness, claims adjuster and medical personnel. Write down the date, time, content and people involved in the conversation, whether in-person or on the phone.
