Thanksgiving Day Travel: Safe Driving Tips

November 23, 2017 | By admin

Celebrating with loved ones is something that millions of people look forward to every Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, getting to those celebrations safely can be a challenge. Traffic accidents and traffic fatalities tend to increase during the holidays because people have time off from work and use the extended weekend to travel. With more vehicles on the roads, there is almost always a surge in auto accidents.

Don’t risk your life this Thanksgiving. Take the following steps to protect yourself before, during, and after you hit the road:

  • Get gas. Do not start a long trip over Thanksgiving weekend without first making sure that the gas tank is filled up. You do not want to get stuck on the side of the road.
  • Pack a first aid kit. In case of a serious medical emergency, you should have a first aid kit in the vehicle. You never know when you or a family member could become ill while traveling.
  • Bring water. Stay hydrated while driving, especially if you plan to be on the road for a long time without stopping.
  • Avoid distractions. One of the worst things you can do while driving is to use a cell phone or other mobile device. Distracted driving could result in a collision and cause significant injuries to you, your passengers, and other motorists.
  • Use rest areas. You may find yourself driving for many hours without stopping during Thanksgiving travel. It’s important to use rest areas if you begin to feel tired. Don’t take any chances when it comes to your safety and the safety of your loved ones – pull over and rest before continuing the journey.
  • Always wear your seatbelt. Wear your seatbelt – and make sure that your passengers wear their seatbelts. In the event of a collision on the road, a seat belt will dramatically increase your odds of surviving the accident.
  • Leave early. If you are in a rush while driving, the chances of an accident significantly increase. You want to travel safely this Thanksgiving, so make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
