- A University of Utah study found that “the impairments associated with cell phone use while driving may be as profound as those associated with driving while drunk.” Drivers talking on cell phones “reacted more slowly…and were involved in more accidents” than those who drove while intoxicated. The difference between those using handheld and hands-free mobile devices was negligible.
- Another study found that drivers talking on cell phones took 40 percent longer to react to seeing a pedestrian in a crosswalk, whether they were talking on a hands-free phone or a handheld device.
