Ex-Wrestler Hulk Hogan Wins $115 Million in Sex Tape Privacy Case

Hulk Hogan, the former pro wrestler and TV star, has won a huge award in a civil case revolving around the release of a sex tape. Gawker Media posted a segment from the sex tape, which featured Hogan, on its Gawker.com website in 2012. Hogan later sued the online media company for violating his privacy rights.
The Hogan sex tape privacy case generated a great deal of media attention because it involved a media company that has been frowned upon by many for prioritizing “tabloid journalism” and salacious headlines over straightforward coverage of newsworthy events. Hogan’s attorney said as much after the verdict was issued, declaring that this case was a “victory” for both Hogan and “anyone else who’s been victimized by tabloid journalism.”
Sex Tape Case Likely Headed for an Appeals Court
Even before the verdict was rendered, Gawker Media appeared to be priming itself for a big loss. Gawker’s attorneys spoke with members of the media and said that the jury should have been allowed to see evidence that may have proved vital to a sound decision in the case. For example, the judge excluded from the jury’s view the actual sex tape that was filmed. Additionally, the jury was not allowed to hear potentially racist comments that Hogan reportedly made during a deposition.
In the meantime, Gawker Media will be required to post a $50 million bond while the case remains pending and winds its way through the appeals process. That’s because Florida law requires a party appealing a lower court decision to post bond, with the amount capped at $50 million.
