6 Summer Safety Tips

Summer is an exciting time of the year for many. It means less time at work, kids are out of school, and both friends and families can gather to take part in summer activities. It is important to remain safe during these summer activities, as a misstep or missed precaution can lead to a variety of injuries. Below are six safety tips for the summer:

Use Sunscreen

Be it hiking, biking, a trip to the beach or simply laying around at the park, one major defense should not be overlooked: sunscreen. The sun’s rays, particularly on extra hot days, can be very harmful to the skin. Beyond a sunburn, extended and unprotected exposure to the sun can lead to various skin conditions and even cancer.

Stay Hydrated

One can never have too much water when spending time in the great outdoors. Particularly in summer when air is dry and the sun is beaming, hydration should never be overlooked. One should regularly drink water to stave off dehydration and possible injury.

Supervise Children

Summer often means a trip to the beach or a pool party. Every year, thousands of lives are lost to drowning, a sizable amount of which belongs to children. Parents should always take care to supervise their children around water to prevent drowning.

Avoid Food Poisoning

Whether at a barbecue or at a picnic, there are plenty of opportunities in the summer to catch food poisoning, simply because foods tend to sit out for an extended period of time. Before consuming or allowing a child to consume anything at these outdoor activities, inspect the food and take into account how long it has been sitting out.

Practice Grilling Safety

If grilling outdoors, take care to keep the grill at safe distance away from nearby structures where flames could rise and cause a devastating accident. Also be sure to keep cooking tools, fuels and the grill itself at a safe distance from children and other visitors.

Always Be Prepared

Even with all the safety precautions in place, it helps to keep around a first aid kit with a few bonus items particularly for summer situations. Salves for poison oak, cold packs, and a thermometer make great additions to the standard bandages, gauze, antibiotics and other common staples of a first aid kit.
Despite best efforts, many injuries happen for a variety of reasons during the summer – outdoor activities lend themselves to these situations. If you or a loved one has been injured due to someone else’s negligence, contact a lawyer who could help.
