Chaz Dean Sued for Defective Hair Conditioner Products, FDA Issues Safety Warning

The federal government has issued a safety alert about WEN hair conditioning products, which are manufactured by Chaz Dean, Inc. The warning was deemed necessary by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after investigators found one of the Chaz Dean company product lines could result in serious adverse health consequences for users, including itching, rashes, and even hair loss.
These kinds of safety warnings from the FDA are rare for beauty products, but in this case the government took the extreme step of issuing the alert to consumers. The FDA has already received 127 reports of physical damage, injuries, and harm being suffered by users of the WEN line of hair conditioning products. On top of that, consumers have reportedly filed more than 21,000 complaints directly to Chaz Dean, Inc. and Gunthy Renker, the product marketer and manufacturer. The FDA did not become aware of the massive number of complaints until inspectors went to the Chaz Dean manufacturing facilities to conduct an investigation.
The FDA’s official safety alert indicates that investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the negative health consequences to WEN product consumers. The ingredients used in the line of conditioning products include aloe vera, chamomile extract, and soy protein, but none of those ingredients are considered toxic.
The FDA warning comes at a particularly bad time for Chaz Dean, which has already been named in a class action lawsuit concerning the allegedly defective products. The product liability suit was filed in 2014, with the plaintiffs claiming that their use of WEN low-lather cleansing conditioners from Chaz Dean, a celebrity stylist, resulted in significant hair loss and balding.
