CRF Frozen Foods, a major distributor of frozen foods in the United States and Canada, has issued a massive recall of dangerous food products after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found several issues during an inspection of the company's processing plant.
In recent weeks, several retailers had to issue recalls of CRF frozen food items because of an outbreak of Listeria. Most of the affected products included as ingredients fruits and vegetables manufactured at the CRF production facility.
The CRF Frozen Foods processing plant is located in Pasco, Washington. The FDA sent inspectors to the facility after receiving reports of illnesses caused by consumption of the company's frozen food items. The inspection was performed over a three-day period, with the results eventually being released on the FDA website.
According to the FDA, inspectors found less-than-desirable health and sanitary conditions at the food processing plant. Moreover, the conditions are such that the company may struggle to perform “proper cleaning and maintenance†in order to ensure that the possible Listeria outbreak is contained and resolved. Among the potentially dangerous conditions at the processing plant were a cracked plastic shovel that was used to scoop food, missing pieces of plastic on a production line for onions used as ingredients in several frozen food items, and shoddy tape to fix a cracked metal plate on a food packing line.
While the recall is in effect and the frozen food manufacturing facility is in the process of being cleaned and decontaminated, CRF Frozen Foods temporarily shut down the processing plant and laid off several hundred workers.
