Glass Found in Package of Emerald Cashews, Prompts Voluntary Product Recall

Snyder’s-Lance, a major manufacturer of snack foods in the United States, has issued a recall of cashews after the company got a consumer complaint about a small piece of glass in a product.
Last week, Snyder’s-Lance got word of a piece of glass being found in a 100-calorie pack of Emerald roasted and salted cashew halves and pieces. The company conducted an investigation and then took swift action to recall its popular Emerald cashews.
The affected food products were sold throughout the U.S. in seven-pack boxes of smaller .62 ounce packages and were marked with December 2016 best-if-used-by dates.
At this time, it remains unclear exactly how the glass ended up in the package of cashews. However, Snyder’s-Lance indicated that investigators may have traced the source of the dangerous glass to one of the company’s suppliers.
Although there were no injuries or illnesses reported as a result of consumption of the cashews – the consumer complaint indicated that the glass was found, not consumed – the company still took immediate action and issued the voluntary recall.
After the recall was issued, Snyder’s-Lance released an official statement on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. The statement read, in part, that the company placed a “priority” on ensuring that its products are safe and that retail customers and consumers are not placed at risk of injury, illness or death. The food manufacturer said that the product recall was being issued “out of an abundance of caution.”
Presumably, being proactive when it comes to protecting consumers is also about insulating a product manufacturer against liability. A consumer who suffers a serious injury, or worse, as a result of eating a product, like cashews, could potentially file a product liability claim against the food manufacturer.
