It was a grisly scene on Interstate 80 in New Jersey where a school bus was ripped apart after a dump truck hauling a full load collided with it. The school bus driver had attempted to make an illegal U-turn in the highway median, only to be struck from behind by the dump truck.
The impact ripped the bus apart, leaving it torn from its chassis and lying on its side in the median. One teacher and one fifth-grade girl were killed in the collision, while 43 others were injured.
The school bus was carrying 38 fifth-graders and seven adults and was on its way to a school field trip. The collision occurred around 10:21 a.m. in the Mount Olive area. The driver of the dump truck was also injured in the crash.
The injured were transported to several area medical centers for treatment. Some have since been released, but one child was in a medically induced coma as of the day following the crash.
Highways Are A Common Site for Crashes
In New Jersey there exists a complex and abundant amount of major highways. While they make it so motorists can reach far destinations in a shorter amount of time, there also tend to be the site of catastrophic and often times fatal collisions.
Part of the reason these accidents happen is because of the many number of vehicles on the road at any given time of day and the speed with which they travel. Combine that with things like reckless driving, distracted driving, drunk driving, sudden lane changes, and other hazards and you have a recipe for collisions like the one between the school bus and the dump truck.
Making it worse, these types of highway accidents usually result in catastrophic injuries or death. Catastrophic injuries can be quite debilitating, and can even impact your life for the long term both physically and financially. And dealing with an unplanned death in the family can be emotionally and financially stressful for anyone.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a highway accident or other motor vehicle accident, you will need an experienced attorney in you corner.
