Major Recall Issued on Children’s Cough Syrup

A children’s cough syrup manufacturer has issued a recall of two types of medication after concerns were raised that children might accidentally overdose and become incredibly sick due to a manufacturing mistake.
The cough syrup that has been recalled comes from two batches of the Perrigo Company’s children’s guaifenesin DM grape liquid and three batches of children’s guaifenesin DM cherry liquid. The manufacturer recalled the cough syrup because a dosage cup included in the medication packaging was improperly labeled.
Voluntary Recall to Protect against Accidental Overdoses
The recall is voluntary, so pharmacies and customers are not required to discard or send back the medication. However, given the potential health risks involved, it probably makes sense for anyone with the mislabeled cough syrup to refrain from use.
Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knows about the recall, the government agency is not officially ordering that the medication be returned or thrown out. That’s because the FDA does not believe that the mislabeled product is likely to result in serious side effects. In fact, the recall seems to be proactive rather than reactive; at this time, there have not been any reports of accidental overdoses or subsequent illnesses.
Avoiding a Product Liability Lawsuit
The Perrigo Company’s CEO recently issued a statement declaring that the decision to recall the cough syrup was made in order to “maintain the highest possible product quality standards.” It is possible that the company is issuing the recall in order to avoid potential liability down the road in a product liability lawsuit. If anyone who consumed the cough syrup were to accidentally overdose and get sick as a result, the manufacturer of the cough syrup could face a civil action.
It should be noted that the Perrigo Company did not actually manufacture the dosing cups. But since the cups are included in the company’s packaging of cough syrup medication, they could still be liable.
