Motorcycle Awareness Month Rides through the United States

If you own a bike and plan on hitting the road this season, this month may hold special significance for you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration kicked off its annual Motorcycle Safety Awareness Campaign, a month-long event held each May. The celebration is aimed at increasing safety and education for riders on America’s roadways and promoting proper observance of rules when riding, from what to wear to how to share the road with other drivers. Organizations nationwide will be promoting initiatives to remind bikers – and other drivers who share the road — about motorcycle safety and the best ways to decrease accidents. Some vendors will also be holding giveaways and raffles for safety gear and riding clothing.
As the weather gets warmer, riders in New Jersey and throughout the rest of the country will be hitting US highways by the millions. While this is no doubt the season that every rider waits for, it’s also the season with the highest potential for accidents among this group. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were 4,381 fatal motorcycle crashes across the United States in 2013. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided if riders and drivers observed proper safety precautions and shared the road. Motorcycle riders are 26 times more to be involved in fatal crashes than other motorists.
While events like Motorcycle Awareness Month have been valuable in reducing crashes and helping riders to observe proper safety, accidents remain an unfortunate reality in New Jersey and the rest of the country. If you or a family member has been injured in a motorcycle crash, you will need an experienced personal injury attorney to help you pursue the proper damages. Your medical bills are likely to run into the thousands to say nothing of the time you miss at work. Don’t let what is supposed to be an enjoyable experience turn into a nightmare. Be careful, share the road and if you’re injured, call an attorney.
