Popular Traumatic Brain Injury Treatments May Not Save Lives as Previously Thought

The Brain Trauma Foundation issued guidelines for treating traumatic brain injury 20 years ago. However, the results of a new study are now questioning those guidelines, saying they might not be as useful as previously thought.
Medical professionals from several agencies in California reviewed data relating to two types of TBI treatments used by physicians: craniotomy and intracranial pressure monitoring. Researchers found “no evidence that compliance with the guidelines regarding these procedures led to lower mortality rates among patients treated for brain injuries in all 14 Los Angeles County trauma centers.” The research team, comprised of professionals from trauma centers throughout the LA region as well as UCLA, USC and the Emergency Medical Services Agency, studied information from procedures performed during 2009 and 2010.
