Bill Cosby Charged with Rape in Pennsylvania
Famous comedian Bill Cosby is about to face criminal charges in Pennsylvania stemming from a sex assault allegation.
For more than a year, many national news media outlets have reported on the growing number of rape allegations against Bill Cosby. Now the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office in Pennsylvania has stated its intention to pursue a decade-old case against the 78-year-old entertainer. The district attorney's office announced the decision to file criminal charges just before the end of 2015. On Dec. 30, PA prosecutors held a press conference and emphatically stated that they will be “seeking justice on behalf of the victim.â€
The alleged victim in this case is Andrea Constand, a woman who first brought the rape allegations to the attention of Pennsylvania law enforcement in 2004. Although the criminal case stalled in 2005, Constand was still able to pursue a civil suit against Cosby. During a deposition in the civil case, Cosby reportedly admitted to providing Quaaludes to women, including Constand, in the hopes of getting them to have sex with him.
Constand was an employee at Temple University at the time of the alleged sexual assault. She later told police that Cosby invited her to his home in Philadelphia, gave her three pills that made her dizzy, and then sexually assaulted her.
As a result of Pennsylvania prosecutors' recent decision to file criminal charges against Cosby, the popular entertainer will probably have to answer the sex crime allegations in court. Cosby has been the subject of heightened media scrutiny for over a year as more than 50 women have come forward with claims that he sexually assaulted them. Despite the high number of rape claims against Cosby, however, this is the first time that he has been criminally charged with a sexual offense.
