Charged with Driving with a Suspended License – NJ Criminal Defense Attorneys

If you have received a ticket for driving with a suspended license in New Jersey, you should not assume that you can avoid a conviction by explaining that you were unaware of the suspension. Most driver’s license suspensions occur for administrative reasons such as failure to pay a vehicle surcharge, and in many cases, the driver is not aware of the suspension until he or she is stopped for an unrelated violation. Even if you did not know that your license had been suspended, the penalties for a conviction can still be extremely serious.

The majority of license suspensions are for administrative reasons such as failure to pay parking tickets or failure to pay a vehicle surcharge. For administrative suspensions, you may have defenses such as failure by the state to provide you with adequate notice of the suspension.

If your driver’s license suspension was ordered by a court for reasons such as DUI, refusal to take a breath test or driving without insurance, you may have fewer defenses available to you. However, our lawyers can still challenge the reason for your driver’s license suspension.
